The words “urinals” and “size” in the same title have got you thinking.  You would be right in your assumption, but there is so much ground to cover before we get there.  The fact is that the size of the European flushing control systems market will grow to £560 million in 2023 from £500 million in 2016.  Excusing me quoting European figures this close to, yet another, deadline it is easy to see why now is the time to review your urinals.

One of the most controversial “revolutions” over the past decade has been the waterless urinal.  These arrived on the scene in the mid-2000s to a lot of conflicting opinions.  Over the past 10-15 years, we have seen an increasing level of implementation.  This does not come without growing pains.

There is the simple fact that urine will dry on and produce a foul odour.  The cure is cleaning with water and cleaning chemicals at regular intervals.  Further to this many everyday liquids will lower the effectiveness of the cartridges.  This further reduces the lifespan and efficiency of the consumables.  These cartridges end up in landfill leeching chemicals into the environment for decades to come.  With so many factors at play it is very hard to estimate number of uses leading to under or over estimates.  These can affect budgets and the environment.

With no attempt at a segue I bring you to the punch-line.  How does any of this prove that size matters?  Just one of those wonderful stories that I stumbled across.  One viral marketing aware individual in Southern Thailand created a social experiment in an Esso service station’s toilets.  They placed S, M, L, XL and XXL signs above a set of urinals and then surveyed users.  Most men came out smiling having use the XL or XXL urinals with foreign clients almost all using the XXL unit.  Whatever the outcome of this little survey you can only imagine that this ESSO service station has seen an increase in users and turnover.  There was no comment as to their chosen urinal management system.
